How to declare a major

Once you know what major you want, the department of your intended major can assist you in declaring your major.

You will need to:

  • Bring an unofficial transcript (you can order one on GOLD).
  • Bring a copy of your New Student Profile.
    • If you started school as a freshman in Fall 2002 (or later)* or you began as a transfer Winter 2003 (or later)* you can print a copy of your New Student Profile (you will need to use your UCSB NetID and password).
  • Provide copies of credit memos, if you ever took a course at another college or university after beginning at UCSB.
  • Fill out the petition form that the department will give you.

If you are changing from one major to another within the College of Letters and Science and you have not yet completed 155 units, you will leave the petition in the department, and the department will forward the approved petition to the Office of the Registrar.

*If you started at UCSB before these dates, you can ask for a copy of your New Student Profile at the Office of the Registrar.

» NOTE: «

Special major admission requirements:

  • Some majors require auditions, placement exams, or specific courses and grades to determine whether students are qualified to pursue the major. Check the major sheet and consult with the undergraduate advisor in the department for information about major requirements.

Special circumstances requiring additional approval.

In the following circumstances you must collect the approved petition from the sponsoring department and submit it with a stamped, self-addressed return envelope to the College of Letters and Science for review:

  • You have completed 155 or more units.
  • You are proposing a double major. In this case, you must also submit a memo of understanding, indicating your expected date of graduation and the number of units you expect to have completed by that time.
  • You are changing to the College of Letters and Science from the College of Engineering or the College of Creative Studies. If you are proposing a dual college double major, you must submit a memo of understanding indicating your agreement to meet the regulations of the College of Letters and Science, your expected date of graduation, and the number of units you expect to complete by that time.
