Five Steps to Find a Major Right Now

  1. First: answer this question: Am I a science person?
    • If you answered yes to this question, it is important for you to start the required science course sequence at once, so you will not fall behind. If you decide later you are not a science person after all, you can use your courses for GE or elective credit.
    • The typical sequences are math and chemistry in the freshman year; physics or organic chemistry and (for biology and related majors) EEMB/MCDB courses in the sophomore year.
    • If you answered no to this question continue with steps 2-5.

  2. Read the UCSB General Catalog for the College of Letters and Science list of majors. Or go to the Registrar's office website for the list and requirement sheets.
    • Quickly choose any six majors that appeal to you.

  3. Read all about your potential major choices.
  4. Visit the departments that interest you.
    • Each department has an undergraduate advisor who can help you with major course selection and provide information about major courses offered each quarter. Many departments have peer advisors who can share ideas about why they chose the major.

  5. Talk to an advisor or peer advisor in the College of Letters and Science.
    • Academic and peer advisors in the college office can help you to evaluate your options for majors and courses and discuss academic programs to lead to timely graduation (optimally, in four years).
