Beside the fact that you need a major to graduate from UCSB, a major is a way to organize your studies, providing a focus in an academic discipline.
Students are often inhibited in choosing a major because they do not understand the opportunities open to graduates in the wide range of majors available at UCSB.
In order to make a sound major choice, you should gather information about majors at UCSB. Combined with an understanding of your own academic strengths and your career and personal future goals, this information will help you make a successful choice of major by the time you reach junior standing (earn 84 units).
You must declare a major by your junior year to ensure that you are eligible to register in classes each quarter. Your registration will be blocked if you do not declare a major.
Special note for athletes: You must declare a major by your junior year in order to remain eligible for competition.
