University of California (UC) Entry Level Writing Requirement

To graduate from UCSB, you must demonstrate an acceptable level of ability in English composition by satisfying the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement in one of the ways listed below. Once you matriculate at UCSB (pay fees and register for your first regular quarter), you can satisfy the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement only by method 6 or 7. Further, we will not award credit for composition coursework you complete elsewhere if you have matriculated at UCSB but you have not yet satisfied the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement.

Ways to satisfy the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement

Before matriculation at UCSB

  1. Earn a score of 680 or higher on the SAT II Subject Test in Writing.
  2. Earn a score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in either English Composition and Literature or English Language and Composition.
  3. Earn a score of 5 or higher on the higher level English A International Baccalaureate Examination.
  4. Pass the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam while in high school.
  5. Earn a grade of C or higher in a course considered equivalent to UCSB Writing 2 at another college or university.

After matriculation at UCSB

  1. Pass the UC Analytical Writing Placement Exam during your first quarter at UCSB. This option is available only if you did not take the exam while in high school (item 4 above). If you took the exam while in high school and did not pass, you may not take the test again at UCSB; instead, you must satisfy UC Entry Level Writing Requirement by the seventh way below.
  2. Earn a grade of C or higher in Writing 1 within your first three quarters at UCSB*. Note that you must take the UC Anallytical Writing Placement exam (either while in high school or in your first quarter at UCSB) before you can register for this course. In addition, note that you must repeat this course if your grade is lower than C.

*Students who are placed in English as a Second Language should consult the Writing Program (1520 South Hall) concerning an adjustment to this deadline.
