Academic Residence Requirements

You must complete all of the following:

  1. At least three regular terms within the University of California. A term is a regular quarter or summer session in which you complete six or more units as a registered student. A UC summer session in which you complete at least two units is the equivalent of one half term. In this context, "summer session" refers to the entire summer, not each minisession.

  2. At least 35 of your final 45 units while in residence in the College of Letters and Science at UCSB.

  3. At least 27 upper-division units while in residence in the College of Letters and Science at UCSB.

  4. At least 20 units in your upper-division major while in residence in the College of Letters and Science at UCSB. (If you are pursuing a double major, you must complete at least 20 upper-division units in each major while in residence in the college; you may not apply any coursework toward the academic residence requirement in both majors.)

  5. At least 12 units in the upper-division minor while in residence in the College of Letters and Science at UCSB, if you are pursuing a minor. (You may not apply the same units toward residence in both your major and minor.)

NOTE: Only University of California coursework applies to item 1. Further, only coursework you complete at UCSB as a registered UCSB student applies to items 2-5 above. In particular, the following DO NOT count toward academic residence items 2-5:

  • Coursework completed at any other college or university.
  • Coursework completed at other University of California campuses.
  • University of California Education Abroad Program coursework. (An adjustment is made to item 2, however, for students who participate in UC EAP in senior standing. See the General Catalog for details.)
  • University of California Extension coursework (even if it is UCSB coursework completed by concurrent enrollment through University Extension).
  • Intersegmental Cross Enrollment coursework.
