Progress Checks

Keeping Track of Your Progress Toward Graduation

It is YOUR responsibility to ensure that you fulfill all degrees requirements, but help is available through written progress checks. In addition to formal progress checks, you can use the checklist of degree requirements at the back of your Letters and Science Academic Requirements brochure.

About Progress Checks

Progress Checks tell you about your progress toward:

  • Unit requirements
  • General Education requirements, including both General Subject Areas (A-G) and Special Subject Requirements
  • UC Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly Subject A) and American History and Institutions requirements.

Progress checks do NOT tell you about your progress toward:

  • Major requirements
  • Minor requirements
  • Academic residence requirements
  • GPA requirements.


You may request one Junior Progress Check, one Senior Progress Check, and assistance with one Senior Self-Check (see below for details on each):

Senior Progress Check

For students who

  • are in the College of Letters and Science.
  • have completed 84-134.9 units.
  • have been at UCSB for more than 2 quarters.
  • have not received a Junior Progress Check before.

For students who

  • have completed 135 or more units.
  • have not declared candidacy for the current quarter.
  • have not received a Senior Progress Check before.

How to request one

  • Bring a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your Perm # in the upper left corner to the college advising office (1117 Cheadle Hall).
  • It will be mailed out to you in approximately two weeks.

How to request one

  • Inquire in the Office of the Registrar (1105 SAASB).
