You must fulfill the American History and Institutions requirement in one of the following five* ways:

Present a score of 650 or higher on the SAT II Subject Test in U.S. History.

Present a score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in American History.

Present a score of 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in American Government and Politics.

Complete an approved course at UCSB or an equivalent at another accredited college or university.

Pass a noncredit examination in American history offered in the UCSB Department of History during the first week of the quarter (consult the department for further information).
*International students on a nonimmigrant visa may petition
for a waiver of this requirement through the director of International
Students and Scholars.

You can satisfy the American History and Institutions requirement any time before you graduate. -
If I do all my GE requirements, does that mean I've satisfied American History and Institutions?
Not necessarily. Many courses from the American History and Institutions list also appear in one of the General Education areas, and if you take such a course, you are free to apply it to both requirements. However, American History and Institutions is not part of the General Education Program, and only with careful planning can you be sure of fulfilling both. -
If I've done IGETC (the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum), does that mean I've satisfied American History and Institutions?
Not necessarily. IGETC does not automatically include coursework for American History and Institutions. You may have taken an IGETC (or other) course that also applies to American History and Institutions, but the only way to know for sure is to check your New Student Profile.
