Why Are Grades Important?

Your UC grades and grade-point average (GPA) determine your academic eligibility at UCSB for:

  1. Continuing at UCSB: Your grades must be high enough so that you will not be subject to disqualification (see discussion under Probation and Disqualification).

  2. Entrance to a major that has a pre-major: You must earn the required GPA in specified courses.

  3. Enrollment in certain courses: For some courses, prerequisites include not only specified courses but also a certain minimum grade in those courses (see the General Catalog for prerequisites).

  4. Graduation: To qualify for graduation, you must have a University of California GPA of at least 2.0 in the following:
    • overall
    • total major (including all courses required for or applicable to the major, both upper- and lower-division)
    • upper-division major (including all applicable courses)

  5. Dean's Honors: You must earn a 3.75 or higher quarter GPA in at least 12 units. A grade of NP during a quarter will disqualify you from receiving Dean's Honors for that quarter.

  6. College Honors Program membership: Unless you are accepted into the program at admission, you must earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA in at least 12 letter-graded units to join. To remain in the program you must maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA and fulfill other requirements. Consult the College Honors Program website for more details.

  7. Honors at graduation: You must earn at least 76 letter-graded units within the University of California, and your GPA must be within the
    • top 2.5% of your class for highest honors
    • next 6% for high honors
    • next 11.5% for honors

  8. Graduation with College Honors: You must earn a 3.85 GPA in at least 135 letter-graded units within the University of California.

  9. Departmental honors program participation: You must meet the GPA requirement specified by your department if you wish to participate in its honors program.

  10. Education Abroad Program (EAP) participation: You must meet a specified minimum GPA requirement to participate in EAP. Consult the EAP website for details.

  11. Washington Center Program (UCDC) participation: To be accepted into the Washington Center Program, you must earn a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Consult the Washington Center website for details.

  12. Many internship opportunities: You must earn whatever GPA may be specified to be considered for certain internships.

Beyond your enrollment at UCSB, your grades may be important in the following ways:

  1. All graduate and professional schools use grades as one of the measures for admission. Although admission committees will evaluate your entire record, they generally give most attention to grades in:
    • courses completed in the last two years
    • courses that are pertinent to the topic to be studies at the graduate or professional level.

  2. Many (but not all) internship opportunities require certain grades.

  3. Some (but not all) potential employers will review your academic record while considering your application.
