Tips for Pre-Health Freshmen

by Maria Elena Bouregy, Daria Thompson, and Matthew Daily

The following "Tips for Pre-Health Freshmen" were compiled by Maria Elena Bouregy, Letters and Science Academic Health Advisor, and our two Student Health Advisors, Daria Thompson and Matthew Daily.

  1. Don’t worry, you don’t have to pick a major yet, and you do NOT have to be a Biology major, as long as you complete the Pre-med curriculum.

  2. Check out the Health Professions Advising website for information about recommended classes to take, recommended schedules, volunteering opportunities, joining the health list serve, and student organizations (http://www.ltsc.ucsb.edu/health/)

  3. Sign up for the Chemistry series: CHEM 1A/1AL, CHEM 1B/1BL, CHEM 1C/1CL; this is a pre-requisite for the Biology series that you need to take Sophomore year.

  4. Sign up for the Calculus series: MATH 34A-34B or MATH 3A-3B-3C

  5. Remember, AP credits do NOT always count for Medical School prerequisites!  If you passed out of Calculus, Statistics, English, or Physics with AP credit, you may need additional courses.

  6. Schedule an appointment with the Peer Advisors if you ever have questions regarding completing you GE requirements, or about potential majors.

  7. Plan early for Education Abroad!  You might need to think about taking science courses while abroad or about scheduling your MCAT/DAT/PCAT/GRE exam around traveling.

  8. Getting good grades is very important if you are hoping to enter any Allied Health field (medical, dental, veterinary, physical therapy, physician assistant, pharmacy, and nursing), so study hard.

  9. Please come in to talk to the Health Professions academic advisor, Maria Elena Bouregy, and the Health Peers, Daria Thompson and Matt Dailey if you ever have questions.  They are available throughout the day for appointments and walk-ins.

  10.  Enjoy your first year and balance your time between work and play!
