FALL 2007 - Late Edition

College of Letters and Science Honors Program Welcomes Undeclared Students

Greetings Students,

We hope you are enjoying fall first quarter at UCSB and that your midterms are going well. If we haven’t had the opportunity to meet or speak with you, we want to introduce ourselves. As Student Honors Coordinators, we serve as a resource to honors students. We put on various events throughout the year, serve as academic advisors for students, and head the honors peer-mentor program. Another part of our job is to expose students to opportunities the honors program can provide. We would like to encourage you to consider the benefits of taking an honors section when deciding on a major. Honors sections are smaller discussion sections held with the professor, and they can be extremely beneficial to finding out more information about a major. Within these sections, you go more in depth into the material, providing additional insight to the field of study. Also in honors sections, you are given the chance to get to know the professor. This gives you the opportunity to learn about possible careers associated with the major. This information can help you determine whether or not you enjoy the particular subject and wish to pursue it further as a major.

Interestingly enough, the honors section for Political Science 6 helped both of us declare Political Science as a major. After enjoying the honors section, we went from undeclared to Political Science majors.

When registering for your winter courses, take a look at the honors sections being offered for the quarter at http://www.honors.ltsc.ucsb.edu/courses/. Congratulations to those of you who are already in the Honors Program. We look forward to seeing applications from those of you who will become eligible after fall grades are posted.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

The College Honors Program is open to any student with an overall UCSB grade-point average of 3.5 on a minimum of 12 graded baccalaureate units. Once accepted, students may continue as program members as long as they maintain the required grade-point average and complete honors courses. Please note: Eligibility criteria are subject to change at any time.

Lower-division honors coursework consists of special honors discussion sections attached to large lecture courses. Often taught by the professor rather than by a TA, these sections are very useful to students who want to get a sense of what upper-division work in a field will be like.

Applications are available either online (http://www.honors.ltsc.ucsb.edu) or in the college office (Cheadle 1117).

For further information please contact College of Letters and Science Honors Program Coordinator Regina Fletcher at rfletcher@LTSC.ucsb.edu.
