Advising Services for Athletes

Q: What if I want to go to summer school?

A: Many student athletes return home for summer and attend their local community colleges. Summer programs must be reviewed with an academic advisor in the College of Letters and Science prior to enrolling to ensure that NCAA academic requirements will be met for continued athletic eligibility.

Refer to www.assist.org for a listing of community college courses that are

  • UC transferable
  • Acceptable for General Education and pre-major requirements.
Q: Can I get assistance in developing time management and study skills?

A: CLAS (Campus Learning Assistance Services) offers several workshops such as time management, identifying your learning style, reading strategies, how to take good lecture notes, and preparing for objective and/or essay exams. Stop by Building 477, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

Q: Are there courses specifically for UCSB student athletes?

A: Although not specifically designed for athletes, Interdisciplinary 20 (Introduction to the University) is recommended for first-year students.

Q: Does UCSB offer a major in Physical Education?

A: No, but UCSB offers a minor in Exercise and Sport Studies. Students may select one of the following four tracks; Sports Management, Fitness Instruction, Exercise and Health, or Athletic Coaching.

Q: Do I receive priority registration?

A: Yes, with the exception of your first quarter at UCSB, as long as you remain on the athletic roster for your sport.

Q: Does UCSB have student athlete organizations and/or publications?

A: Yes.

  • The SAAB (Student Athlete Advisory Board) is an organization with representatives from each athletic team. The board has several objectives including developing and maintaining relationships with the local community, philanthropy, and working as a liaison with the athletic administration regarding relevant athletic issues.
  • The UCSB CHAMPS/Lifeskills program publishes a quarterly student athlete newsletter.
  • Gaucho Locos is a student athlete fan club. Check out their website at www.GauchoLocos.com.
  • Sports media guides are available from the UCSB Intercollegiate Athletics Media Relations Office at (805) 893-3428.
