Advising Services for Athletes

The intercollegiate athletics program at UCSB www.ucsbgauchos.com competes at the NCAA Division I level and currently offers:

10 varsity sports for men
cross-country, water polo, soccer, basketball, swimming, track and field, baseball, golf, volleyball and tennis
9 varsity sports for women
tennis, volleyball, swimming, track and field, cross-country, softball, basketball, water polo and soccer.


UCSB places the highest priority on the academic progress of student athletes and provides support systems to assist them in reaching their academic goals. The College of Letters and Science assigns two professional academic advisors and several peer advisors to address the special needs of student athletes. Questions that require analysis of your progress or planning for the future are best addressed through an appointment. Shorter questions can often be answered on a walk-in basis. What academic requirements must I meet to be eligible for athletic participation?

  • Enroll in a minimum of 12 quarter units per quarter to practice or compete
  • Maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative grade point average
  • Complete a minimum of 36 quarter units in an academic year
  • Complete minimum percentages of degree requirements each academic year
  • Continuing students must complete a minimum of six units in the quarter prior to your season of competition.

When do I have to declare a major?

  • NCAA requires that you declare your major by the beginning of your third year.
